Julie's Adventures in Babysitting

Hello, my friends! It's a been a while since I've had anything of substance to talk about, but today I have something very special to share with you! My little cousin, Silas, spent three days with us while his parents (my cousin, Melissa and her husband, Jamie) were out of town. Let me tell you all about it.

Silas is the first - and so far the ONLY - great-grandchild on my mom's side of the family, so needless to say he gets a ton of attention. He's turning three in November, and he's just the cutest kid in the entire world - so happy and clever and full of life.

Jamie dropped him off on Friday morning, and Silas didn't even shed a tear when his Daddy left. It helped that I had two new colouring books and toy cars to distract him. But the thing that fascinated him the most in our house were the turtles. My mom has a bunch of life-sized decorative turtles scattered all throughout the house, and Silas found each and every one. He asked us what their names were, so my mom and I took turns coming up with a name for each one he pointed to. Then, of course, the hard part came when we had to remember what we named them for the next time he asked us. We also have a mommy and baby whale, a big elephant that looks like Babar, and a mommy and baby giraffe. Oh, and a big painting with a camel on it. And a bunch of totem pole-like things hanging on the walls. It's like a jungle in here.

Silas looooved my Fisher-Price Little People. I've had them since I was maybe three or four. I got them out the second day he was here, and he just went nuts over them. It made me so happy to see someone getting as much joy out of those toys as I did (and still do!). I remembered all their names too! I have at least 40 or 50 of them, so that's pretty impressive, wouldn't you say?

On Friday afternoon, my parents and I took Silas to the zoo. It's about 25 minutes from our house, and it's FREE! He loved seeing all the animals, but what he loved most was the train ride that we got to go on. I kinda did too. Oh, and the play area. He dragged me to every single slide in the place. I got stuck on about three of them, but I somehow made it out alive. After our zoo adventure, we all went out for pizza. Silas was seriously loving us at that point. The zoo AND pizza! Killer combo, my friends.

Saturday, my brother, Jeff and his new fiancee, Kim, came over to see Silas and to help us with some outside work. We gave Silas a big yellow dump truck to play with while the rest of us worked. At one point I picked up a brick and found a baby snake hiding under it. The snake provided a good 35 minutes of entertainment for Silas (and me). Jeff and Kim stayed overnight, so we all had a pj party Saturday night.

Yesterday we had a lazy day, watched The Lion King and Snow White, and Silas and I played Little People for a longgggg time. Jamie came back late last night and crashed here with Silas, and then this morning he took our special boy away. :( We were so sad to see him go, but he definitely wore us out - yep, even me. I was his best playmate. I took such good care of him, made sure he was happy and entertained. I tickled him and cuddled with him and went to the bathroom with him whenever he needed to go. I read to him and talked with him and enjoyed every single minute we spent together. And the best news of all is that we get to see him again next weekend at our family reunion! I'll never forget this weekend, and hopefully the pictures we took will help Silas remember it too. Yes, I have pictures! Wanna see 'em? Okay!

Slides are awesome!Collapse )

Wednesday, meet Game Day

So I heard that Tuesday sucked for a lot of people. I even heard the words 'Tuesday is the new Monday' bandied around, which is why I bring you a very special Wednesday Edition of Game Day in hopes to make your day a little brighter. Today's game is brought to you by Kraft Peanut Butter and the people inside Julie's head. It was inspired by Iwanna some time ago, and it happens to be one of my very favourite pastimes. I call it 'Name That Flag'. The object is to correctly identify each of the flags pictured below. No Googling, no phoning a friend, and no hints ... except maybe one hint if you're good. Ready? And go!

Let's do the wave!Collapse )

Happy birthday, Kat!!!

Hope you have the most marvelous day! You are a truly wonderful, generous person, and it's been a pleasure getting to know you through the Flame. All the best to you on this day and for the rest of the year!

Happy birthday, Schmoopy!!!

Dearest Pennypacker,

May your day be as exquisite as you are. There is no one else I'd rather do business with. You are the cheese to my macaroni, the keys to my keyboard, the, uh ... candy to my Halloween. The Saab factory would be lost without you. Add it to the outline!

Hey, hey! What's shakin'?

So last night was date night, as many of you know, and here I am with the recap like the good girl I am.

Hooked on a feelingCollapse )

I'm going on a date tonight!

I'll let you all digest that for a minute. Also, how perfect is my icon? *hugs Sue hard*

Okay, so yeah. Let's talk about this date. A little over a week ago, my friend Iwanna came to see me, and we went on a tour of Old Fort Erie. We had a marvelous time together, and we just loved every aspect of the tour ... particularly our tour guide, Ryan. He was quite cute, extremely clever, and very amusing. We liked him so much that we got our picture taken with him (in his War of 1812 era costume).

Now, let's talk about Emma. Emma is my ultra-fabulous roommate. She works at Old Fort Erie and had given us free tickets to get in. She knows and is friends with Ryan. Needless to say, when I showed Emma the pictures we took at the Fort, she was ecstatic to see one featuring Ryan. She told me that he's been asking her to set him up with someone for a while, and the wheels in her head began turning. Turns out that Ryan told Justin - Emma's boyfriend who also happens to work at the Fort - that he thought I was cute. That's all the encouragement Emma needed. She and Ryan exchanged a few text messages, the last one containing my facebook info. Once facebook gets involved, it's pretty much official.

So Ryan and I have been chatting back and forth (or flirting) on facebook for about a week, and we finally set a date for tonight. He's coming to my place around 7. I told him to bring his banjo and his Fort costume. He said that the Fort won't let the employees take their costumes home with them, so I said we should pull a costume heist. It's a super sexy costume; I can't help myself. Other things on the agenda for tonight: eating chips and dip, me juggling, Ryan banjo-ing, playing a round of balloon volleyball in the living room (the balloons were for Iwanna, and they're still alive and kickin'), karaoke, karaoke, and karaoke. Sounds like the perfect date, right? Right.

One last thing - Ryan happens to be 6.5 years my junior. I've had a week to get used to this fact and I'm pretty sure I'm okay with it now. I mean, it's just a date. We're not getting married here, so if it doesn't work out, it doesn't work out. But if it does, well ... maybe I'll call him Junior. :)

Oh, wish me luck!
